Materials

Fused Quartz Glass (e.g., Suprasil, Homosil, Infrasil):
Composition: Ultra-high purity silica (SiO₂ >99.95%), minimal impurities (trace metals, OH⁻ content).
Key Property: Ultra-low coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE ~0.55 x 10⁻⁶/K).

Key Properties
Thermal Performance:

Extreme Thermal Stability: Lowest CTE among commercial glasses (~0.55×10⁻⁶/K), enabling unmatched resistance to thermal shock (ΔT >1000°C).

High-Temperature Resilience: Softening point ~1580°C, usable up to 1100°C continuously.

Optical Performance:

Broad Spectral Transmission: Deep UV (≤170nm) to near-IR (~2500nm), ideal for UV optics, lasers, and harsh environments.

Low OH⁻ Variants: Custom grades minimize IR absorption (e.g., Infrasil for IR optics).

Processing & Structural Integrity:

Dimensional Invariance: Near-zero thermal expansion ensures shape retention during high-temperature processing (e.g., molding, annealing).

Viscosity Challenges: Steep viscosity curve requires precise temperature control for molding (less forgiving than borosilicates).

Chemical & Environmental Durability:

Inertness: Exceptional resistance to acids (except HF), water, and weathering.

Radiation Hardness: Maintains clarity under UV/X-ray exposure (critical for semiconductor/space applications).

Material Consistency:

Ultra-High Purity: Synthetic production (e.g., vapor deposition) ensures homogeneity, low bubbles/inclusions.
